Western Slope Negotiations Update August 20, 2009
More than 100 workers met with the Corporation today at the Couryard Marriott in Grand Junction at 10 a.m. Both Safeway and City Market negotiators were present. The bargaining unit included a united team of workers from the Front Range who came to support the Western Slope workers, just as the Western Slope Local 7 members have traveled to Denver to support Front Range workers in negotiations.
The workers believe that all employees statewide should receive equal pay for equal work. Western Slope workers are paid $1 an hour less for the same work even though the cost of living in many places on the western slope is higher than the Front Range. Western Slope Managers - but not regular workers - are paid more to reflect the higher cost of living. The workers want Western Slope wages to be brought up to those on the Front Range and Pueblo.
Despite the workers' request for fair wages, the corporation had no new offer. The bargaining team requested a last, best, and final offer from the Corporation, but the corporation responded they did not have another offer.
The Worker Bargaining Team will next meet with the Corporation at 10 am at the Westin Westminster.
